Is it Goodbye to Birthday Cake Forever?

Making a decision to pursue a healthier lifestyle is great.  Learning all that you can about making healthy choices, cutting fat and sugar, dropping your caffeine intake and avoiding artificial additives will contribute to a longer life and hopefully one with less disease and physical restrictions.

One can’t help but think about an elderly relative (we all know of one) that lived to a ripe and even active old age of 92 even though they enjoyed eggs and bacon every morning and a good cigar after dinner.  Is it really necessary to say goodbye to everything sweet and delicious in life in order to be healthy?

Health is not all about what we eat.  It is also about physical activity, environmental issues and an individual’s state of mind among other things.

Grandpa’s ‘bad habits’ were perhaps balanced by a life of strenuous physical activity and a happy and whole family.  In any event, he certainly seemed to enjoy every one of his 92 years.  Would he have been as happy or indeed healthier if he had skipped the bacon and cigar?  Who knows?

A happy and healthy life is one of balance.  Nobody is going to die early because they enjoyed a piece of birthday cake now and then.  You’re also not going to slip into ill health over a Monday morning mocha latte.  Trouble arises when these treats become a regular guest on the menu.

Many “lose it and gain it again” dieters know that part of their downfall is trying to ‘be good’ all of the time.  They feel like they have to say no to everything and end up losing grip and falling into a binge.  Once they give in one time, they throw in the towel and go back to their old habits.

Lifelong changes are better approached gradually.  You can also learn a lot by observing those around you who do not have weight or obvious health challenges.  Are they all turning down Grandma’s pie at Sunday dinner?  The answer is a definite no.

Concentrate more on what you can add to your life to make it healthier than on what you will have to cut out and banish.  Give yourself the freedom to enjoy favorite treats every so often and you’ll enjoy more of the live you’re living – which will contribute a great deal to your health all on its own.
